World Green Organisation (WGO) believes that innovation is the way to tackle social issues, thus came the <a href=\"http:\/\/thewgo.org\/site-eng\/inventor-intro\/\">\u201cSocial Innovation Inventor \u2013 Competition for Innovative Design\u201d<\/a>, aiming at igniting Hong Kong students\u2019 creativity to come up with practical and energy-saving household designs for grassroots families. Very widely received, the competition received 108 team entries and 92 pieces of designs in the preliminary round, with winners elected in late May. The prize presentation ceremony was held on July 11 at the Ma On Shan Plaza.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The prizes were presented by the former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Professor Lam Chiu Ying, the Executive Vice President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Mr Nicholas W. Yang and the CEO of WGO, Dr William Yu. Dr Yu remarked highly on the quality of the design layouts and models, who went on saying that through the competition, students were able to elevate the households\u2019 energy efficiency, lighting effects and ventilation condition through space planning, lighting design, utilization of environmentally friendly materials and furniture arrangements. The designs were also expressed vividly through display models. Yu believed if the designs can be applied practically to the grassroots\u2019 households, it will greatly enhance their living conditions. Not only had the participating students unleashed their creative potential, but they had also visited the underprivileged families and cared for the well beings of others, hence attended a real-life social studies lesson.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-half\">\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thewgo.org\/site\/wp-content\/gallery\/sii\/img_0340a-2.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Champion of Tertiary Group &#8211; Live . Bamboo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div> <div class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-half ezcol-last\">\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Champion of Secondary Group - Multifunctional Bed\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thewgo.org\/site\/wp-content\/gallery\/sii\/img_0340d-2.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Champion of Secondary Group &#8211; Multifunctional Bed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"ezcol-divider\"><\/div>The panel of professional judges included top-notch designer Mr Stanley Wong, Social Ventures Hong Kong Executive Director, Mr. Frances Ngai and Hong Kong Design Centre Executive Director, Dr Edmund Lee; whom all praised the students\u2019 designs. Tertiary group champion\u2019s work: \u201cLive. Move. Bamboo\u201d put forward an air convection-boosting bamboo door, using simple materials to turn muggy feelings fresh and cool; while secondary school group champion\u2019s \u201cMultifunction Bed\u201d was deemed to be an economically and environmentally beneficial piece of furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the winning designs and its models were also on display at the ceremony, which were seen to be highly professional and reflected fully the students\u2019 devotion. These models will then be exhibited at selected MTR stations (Sheung Wan from July to August and Tiu Keng Leng from August to September). Right after the ceremony, the organiser announced the launch of next year\u2019s competition.
