World Green Organisation’s Sustainable Business Award 2016 Ceremony Presented by Ms. Christine Loh Kung-wai, OBE, JP, Under Secretary for the Environment

World Green Organisation (WGO)’s second annual Sustainable Business Award (SBA) was held in Kowloon on 30 September 2016 at the Royal Plaza Hotel. Public listed companies were encouraged to comply with the new Training on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Reporting Guide from the beginning of the year. WGO encouraged both listed and non-listed companies to comply.

WGO first introduced Sustainable Business Award last year in order to reward corporations that apply good sustainable business practices as well as to raise awareness of the importance of ESG. Through SBA, WGO aims to encourage corporations to become a sustainable business and fulfil their social responsibility.

This year, eleven corporations received the award; Green business is on the rise as a global trend

Many corporations participated in the award this year. After careful deliberation by our professional judging panel (see Table 1), a total of 11 corporations were selected to be awarded (Table 2). At the ceremony, officiating guest Christine Loh Kung-wai, OBE, JP, Under Secretary for the Environment, presented awards to the selected corporations and delivered a speech encouraging corporations to focus on ESG development.

Concern for ESG has become a global phenomenon, many local governments in different parts of the world, including mainland China, have started to follow this trend. We expect to see more Hong Kong corporations raising awareness for ESG development.

Dr. William Yu, CEO of WGO, announced that the SBA judging panel evaluated all entries based on the following criteria: workplace quality, environmental protection, operation practice, and community involvement.

We are excited to be hosting the 2nd annual Sustainable Business Award. It was evident that more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of ESG. Despite having stricter judging rules this year, many corporations were still able to showcase their dedication to ESG. Through this competition, we want to see professional insight on how to promote ESG and also encourage corporations to make improvements by learning and understanding each other’s strengths. This, ultimately, will benefit the environment, employees, and society as a whole.

As part of the ceremony, the awarded winners shared their green business practices. Representative from The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited showcased their innovative green technology; aerial inspections to replace conventional climbing inspections. Hong Kong Jockey Club shared how using the electronic Mark Six Lottery has reduced paper consumption by 20%. A.S. Watson Group revealed their A.S. Watson Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility’ strategy and how it has served over 2,500,000 people since 2005.
