WGO’s response to producer responsibility scheme for glass beverage bottles

WGO welcomes the public consultation on the implementation of a mandatory producer responsibility scheme (PRS) for glass beverage bottles.While glass is widely accepted as a recyclable material, implementing such a scheme can boost the recycling rate, relieving pressure on landfills and promoting glass bottle deposit systems.

According to the consultation document, the government will decide the recycling fees after appointing a contractor to collect and recycle glass beverage bottles. WGO urges the government to justify the amount of charges, how they are collected and spent. WGO hopes successful implementation of the scheme will set a good precedent for other types of glass bottles.
