WGO’S RESPONSE TO THE WASTE BLUE PRINT

World Green Organisation(WGO) welcomes the launch of the “Hong Kong: Blueprint for Sustainable Use of Resources 2013-2022”, which outlines the waste reduction targets, strategies and actions for Hong Kong to reduce waste for the next 10 years.

WGO believes that the success of the blueprint relies on the implementation of waste charging scheme as well as other waste reduction measures. The society should attempt to reach a consensus of reducing waste and implementing a holistic waste management strategy that includes the waste reduction, waste recycle, waste recovery and disposal measures.

Given the government has set an aggressive waste reduction target as well as a clear waste management strategy, WGO has no objection to the government’s landfill extension and Intergrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) plan. However, WGO stresses that the landfill extension and IWMF plan should be the “last resort”. The government should try its best to reduce waste at source to prevent the further extension of landfill and construction of IWMF.
